Upper Elementary
Language Arts includes
reading fiction and non-fiction as well as writing for a variety of purposes.
Students read to gain an understanding and enjoyment in the different
subject areas and improve their writing skills through our Writer’s
Workshop. They will also participate in the Junior Great Books Program.
In
addition to computation, problem solving, estimation, probability, spatial
relationships and basic algebraic and geometric concepts, students learn
to communicate the approaches they use to solve problems and to determine
answers to real-world situations that require mathematics.
The Science curriculum
focuses on Life Science, Physical Science and Earth and Space Science.
Students observe life forms, substances and changes in the environment
and conduct experiments, make predictions and draw conclusions. They study
different environments, chemical reactions and forms of energy.
In Social Studies,
communities are explored in greater depth as students study their history,
the working world, local governments and the different regions of the
United States. In fifth grade, they begin studying American History, which
is then explored in greater depth in eighth grade.
The Upper Elementary
students will form the Student Government, nominating officers, running
election campaigns and writing letters. They will also prepare event information
and announce it to the student body and parents.
