Some Facts About Private Education

The first schools in America were private schools. Today, there are more than 28,000 private schools nationwide, with more than six million students Pre-K-12. Private schools account for over 25 percent of the nation’s schools and enroll about 11 percent of all students.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), the number one goal of private schools is academic excellence. Thanks to committed parents and teachers, motivated students and smaller classrooms, private schools are free to focus on educating the whole child within a values-based setting and prepare students for success in life.

Private schools engage students and spark the desire to learn. Teachers expect excellence from students and students tend to live up to those expectations. This rigor helps to account for above-average standardized test scores and increased college attendance.

Students thrive in a safe and supportive environment. Joint reports by the NCES, the Bureau of Justice Statistics and a private study by the Horatio Alger Association have found that a significant percentage of students feel safe in private schools.

Parents often look to private schools as an extension of the home in promoting the values they embrace, and private schools respond. The NCES reports that more than three-quarters of private school parents are “very satisfied” with their child’s school.

The Multiage Classroom

Multiage education is rooted in the philosophy that every child has the right to learn at his or her own pace, that learning is a continuum rather than a series of steps. Diversity is not only a reality but is something to be embraced and that a classroom is a family of learners. By the inclusion of a span of ages and the resulting diversity, students naturally become more accepting of one another’s differences. There is an atmosphere of nurturing and support rather than of pressure to fit within an arbitrary norm. The teacher supports each child’s needs rather than expecting all students to progress in a lock step manner.

A good metaphor for a multiage classroom is a path. Sometimes students move gradually while others move more swiftly. We encourage them to reach their potential, but we also recognize that where they are on the path may not be where others of the same age are at a particular point in time. Where they are depends on a number of factors that require attention to the abilities and needs of each student.

There are many schools across the country that have been implementing the multiage education program successfully for many years. Research shows that children in multiage classrooms often have a greater sense of belonging and more positive social relationships and attitudes toward school than children in same-age classrooms. Attendance in the multiage classrooms is also significantly higher.
