Middle School
Young adolescents
at The Caepe School develop the skills necessary to become independent
learners and contributing members of society.
Classic and contemporary
literature is carefully chosen to develop understanding and foster enjoyment.
Instruction in writing emphasizes the multiparagraph paper with a strong
thesis statement, a well-developed body of ideas and an effective conclusion.
Grammar and an expanded vocabulary are taught in the context of student
writing. Spelling and punctuation are stressed particularly at the proofreading
stage and common problems are highlighted for study.
Mathematics emphasizes
computation, problem solving, estimation, probability and geometric concepts.
Pre-algebra and algebra become the main focus in grades seven and eight,
with practical applications.
Students continue
to be active learners of science and of the scientific method. They observe
the life forms, substances, changes in the environment and conduct experiments,
make predictions and draw conclusions. They become geologists, set up
and observe chemical reactions and study the relationship between the
human brain and the senses.
The Social Studies
curriculum includes the history of the world, ancient civilizations and
world geography. Maps, globes, satellite images and aerial photographs
are used to understand land and water and the relationships between them.
Eighth grade is devoted to a thorough study of United States history.
The Middle School
students are in charge of launching and operating The Caepe School Snack
Bar. They write a business plan, present it to the school’s board
of directors, plan a budget and determine how to operate the snack bar
in a cost-efficient manner, allowing proceeds to be used for community
service.
