Curriculum Early Elementary: Kindergarten - Grade 2 | Upper Elementary | Middle School | Morning Meeting | Homework Policy Language Arts Kindergarten through Second grade are devoted to helping students learn to read so that they can read to learn. Skills are integrated with authentic reading and writing experiences to encourage critical thinking as well as creative self-expression. Math emphasizes computation, problem solving, estimation, spatial relationships and fundamental algebraic and geometric concepts. Students learn the basic algorithms while understanding the concepts of mathematical reasoning. Science is divided into Life Science, Physical Science, and Earth and Space Science. Students observe life forms, substances and changes in the environment as they conduct experiments, make predictions and draw conclusions. Social Studies focuses on the role of being a citizen in a community and in the larger society, country and world. Topics include the community, our earth and its resources, our country today and long ago, our world and people and places in history. The Early Elementary students choose and care for our pets and plants. They learn how to raise the money needed to acquire and care for a particular pet and write to persuade a teacher to allow this animal of choice in the classroom.
